About Us

  • Mary Newcomer

Mary Newcomer was a devoted mother and wife, who was full of life, always quick with a joke, fun to be around and cared deeply for her children. She was diagnosed in May 2004 with a rare hemangiopericytoma brain tumor. Living in a small, eastern Kentucky town, medical resources were limited. After undergoing a nineteen hour procedure at the local hospital, Mary was left in a medically induced coma and with only half of the tumor removed. She and the family then sought care outside of the area, and Mary continued her fight four hours away at the Cleveland Clinic. The level of care and physician expertise demonstrated at the Cleveland Clinic was far superior to her treatment received at her local hospital. It is through her grueling diagnosis, misdiagnosis, and struggle to receive appropriate care for a brain tumor patient, that inspired the creation of the Mary Newcomer Fund in hopes to support others fighting brain cancer a chance to make informed decisions about their care without the additional stress of finances. Mary, unfortunately, lost her battle with cancer in December of 2006. Lindsay, Mary’s daughter, and her husband started hosting a charity golf scramble in 2017 in her memory and the non-profit was officially established in 2020.
